Who We Are
The Colorado Democracy Defense Fund (CDDF) is an independent organization dedicated to protecting democracy and core freedoms in Colorado. We believe that democracy is strongest when people are knowledgeable about their rights and when the rule of law is respected by all.
Our mission is to advance civic education and engagement, respect the constitutional powers that are allocated to the people and their representatives, and stand up to any governmental overreach that threatens the rights and well-being of Coloradans. Born out of Colorado’s proud tradition of innovation, fairness, and independence, CDDF brings together leaders, advocates, and citizens from across the state who share a simple conviction: no society can thrive if the powerful can neglect the rule of law, making it imperative that we protect and defend the freedoms that make our state and nation strong.
What We Are Doing
We are building a statewide platform to defend democracy at every level—from local communities to the statehouse—by focusing on three core priorities:

Defending Colorado’s sovereignty and the rule of law by holding the federal government accountable when it acts unlawfully, including illegal coercion of states, misuse of federal funds, retaliation against Colorado, or attempts to override state constitutional authority. Colorado has both the right and responsibility to chart its own course.

Protecting democratic institutions and election integrity by safeguarding Colorado’s elections, voting systems, and democratic norms against intimidation, disinformation, political retaliation, and efforts to undermine fair representation.

Mobilizing and informing Coloradans through public education, coalition-building, and clear communication so communities understand what is happening, what is at stake, and how to respond in defense of shared democratic values.
Through research, public education, coalition building, and effective communication, CDDF ensures Coloradans are informed and prepared to take action to protect our shared future.
Why It Matters
Our democracy is under unprecedented attack. From efforts to undermine elections and sow distrust in institutions, to sweeping attempts at federal overreach—including unauthorized troop deployments and unlawful detentions—the threats are real and growing. We’ve seen what happens when truth, law, and participation are weakened—it’s our responsibility to stand up before it’s too late.
Colorado has long led the way in proving that democracy can work—for everyone. Based upon rights expressly created in law, we’ve expanded voting access, strengthened protections for the vulnerable, defended immigrant and refugee communities, and built one of the most inclusive states in the nation. But those gains are not guaranteed. Without vigilance and collective action, they can be rolled back overnight.
